The 11th National Conference: Fostering Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security

This year Marymount University is co- hosting the Conference in Arlington VA, right next to Washington DC. This will be our first conference in the Washington area so it provides many new opportunities for participants. The Conference will be unique with special tours and briefings at federal agencies and other organizations in Washington. So, this location provides some different types of learning, sightseeing and social experiences.

Part of the University is next to the hotel we will use for the conference. This means that some of the conference sessions will be in the hotel and others at the University.

The Conference will begin at 1pm on November 9 and conclude at noon on the 12th. The last workshop will conclude on the 15th. We will have a number of instructor certification workshops and other special sessions following the conference. These will include the Law and Justice Program, the ETC-I Workshop, the Security Program Instructor Certification Workshop, and the Character Counts for LPSCS Career Programs Certification workshop (see descriptions below). We will have a number of opportunities for participants to get acquainted and include a special Marymount University reception.

Overview

The National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security (LPSCS) serves as the LPSCS Career Cluster leader through agreements with the State Directors of Career and Technical Education and recognition by the US Department of Education, OVAE. The annual conference includes examples of career programs in all five of the cluster pathways: fire and emergency services, law, security, corrections and law enforcement. In addition, new curriculum, assessments and certifications will be highlighted in key sessions. Additional sessions will include: the role of colleges, starting or improving programs, program evaluation and certification, and specialized programs that can be add-ons to career programs such as Explorers, Youth Court and student organizations. The Conference will include three continental breakfasts, a reception hosted by Marymount University and two luncheons with major speakers. There will be a variety of tours and briefingd offered on Thursday and Friday afternoons in Washington, DC.

Conference Purpose

The conference will present workshops and sessions in the areas of law, public safety, and security that cover the following topics:

  • Planning and developing new, or improving current, career academies and other career-oriented programs and learning communities
  • Methods for forming business partnerships and developing meaningful career program cultures and values
  • Examples of classroom-ready curricula, lesson plans, simulations, scenarios, and related program materials
  • Integrating academic and career standards, knowledge, and skills
  • Updates on national initiatives in law, public safety, and security programs including the States' Career Cluster Initiative and new certification programs,
  • Middle school models
  • Examples of specific career programs for law, law enforcement, corrections, fire and emergency services, and security.

There will be at three special tracks offered during the conference. They are:

1) Developing the Recruitment Pipeline in Partnership with your Local Public Safety Agencies

Over the years we have worked with school districts and public safety agencies that have created systemic approaches to education and employment. This track will provide examples of how a whole system can be developed from middle school through college and into employment in law enforcement, fire and related public safety professions.

2) Technology and Public Safety Careers

Through grants from the National Science Foundation curriculum has been developed to help colleges and secondary schools integrate the technologies currently used by public safety agencies for investigations and other duties. Examples of these and actual materials that can be used will be provided in a series of sessions.

3) Advancing the Security Field as a Dynamic Profession

In the past, security has often been viewed as simply a job or some form of guard. However the profession has changed dramatically requiring many high level skills. This has been especially evident in the federal government where a multi-year project for professionalizing practices and creating certifications in a broad range of security roles has created many opportunities in the career development field. And last year, our partnership with the International Foundation for Protection Officers allows high school programs to provide the curriculum for students to obtain the nationally recognized Protection Officer Certification.
