We will also have a least three returns to Bush International on Wednesday afternoon, July 21.
Conference ThemesThere will be more than 50 sessions offered during the conference. In order to present subjects of most interest to you, we have organized the sessions around several themes. Each session will be one-hour so that we can provide as much variety as possible. Each session will cover one or more of the following themes. Special Programs. These programs are outside the regular for-credit high school courses, or they are integrated with regular courses. Special programs make the law and public safety program unique and help create the sense of a learning community and an environment of mutual support. They may also be pre-high school programs that introduce students to public safety careers or post-high school programs that continue to support and educate students for public safety, law-related, and security careers. Getting Started: Issues for Developing and Improving Career Programs. Career academies and other types of schools-within-schools normally have a core of faculty who work as a team and have the same students. The faculty and students work with a core group of partners that include colleges, public safety, security, and law organizations. Many of the sessions in this track will focus on developing the learning community and family-like culture. The Role of Colleges, College Programs, and Other Postsecondary Options and Programs. The postsecondary relationship to secondary school career programs is often essential in creating academic rigor and obtaining community and parent support. This track will emphasize building the relationships between high schools and colleges, creating articulation and dual credit agreements, using scholarship programs, and developing innovative college programs. Lesson Plans, Curriculum and Standards. This theme focuses on academic courses integrated with the career areas, such as English, the sciences, and social studies and vice versa. Sessions on forensics and physical education and fitness will also be offered. In addition, sessions will address the standards required to merit certificates in different career areas. Law, Law Enforcement and Forensics Career Programs. This track will showcase models from around the country and include program design as well as curriculum. Sessions will cover how to combine law and law enforcement education, forensic science lessons and courses, integration with academic standards, and use of state law-related education programs. Corrections, Security, and Fire and Emergency Services Career Programs. Interest in these career areas has been growing for a variety of reasons. Prison populations and the number of prisons continue to increase; security needs continue to grow due to September 11-related concerns and is an increasingly technology-based field. Fire and emergency services have become more critical to the homeland security strategies both nationally and locally. Models from various states, school districts, and colleges will be highlighted. Two half-day sessions will be offered: Corrections, and Fire and Emergency Services. THE POST-CONFERENCE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION WORKSHOPS Law and Public Safety is a multifaceted curriculum that develops a realistic understanding of law and public safety careers using research and hands-on student projects. The material includes all five career cluster pathways and can be used as a foundation for an introductory course for the Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security career cluster or integrated into more advanced courses. Those attending this course will receive the classroom set: 25 student texts (65 pages each) and a teaching guide on CD (sold separately at a cost of $295). The workshop will provide hands on experience using the materials with discussions on the many ways the materials can be used. The program can be taught as a one semester introductory course or it can be taught as a full year course with added speakers and visits to local public safety/law related organizations. The materials can also be incorporated into more advanced courses as much of it relies on problem-based, case studies. Course cost with materials: __Standard registration: $395 per person __Late registration: $445 If also registering for the conference: ___$345 per person ___ Late registration: $395 ________________________________________________________________________________ Instructor Certification Workshop: Integrating Information Technology into LPSCS Courses at the Secondary and Post-Secondary Levels: The materials for this course have been developed through a project funded by the National Science Foundation, managed by the Education Development Center in cooperation with the National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security. There are two ITAC resources provided to each participant: a booklet containing IT in Action statements and problem-based scenarios for Law, Public Safety, Corrections, and Security (LPSCS). The IT in Action statements illustrate the many ways IT core applications are used in the different LPSCS careers and connect the learner to the real world of work. The scenarios integrate authentic LPSCS workplace job duties and tasks with the use of different IT core applications and provide a deep learning opportunity of different kinds of skills. As a skills building piece, each scenario contains information about the specifics of the work task, including what IT application will be utilized, a definition of the work task(s) to be performed, and the scope of the finished product. The IT components of the scenarios are aligned to the IT Across Careers Rubrics to Assess Basic IT User Skills. The IT in Action statements and scenarios for LPSCS were designed to be used with the ITAC IT Core Lesson Templates which contain all the lesson components and information related to the IT tasks of the lesson. The second resource provided to each participant is an instructor guide that helps instructors make effective use of these materials. The course will help instructors develop a better understanding of how to use all the materials provided and how to access a website specifically designed to provide additional material and information to support the instructor and students.
