NATIONAL CONFERENCE-
Fostering Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security

The National Partnership for Careers in Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security (LPSCS) serves as the LPSCS Career Cluster leader through agreements with the State Directors of Career and Technical Education and recognition by the US Department of Education, OVAE. This annual conference will include examples of career programs in all five of the cluster pathways: fire and emergency services, law, security, corrections and law enforcement. In addition, new curriculum, assessments and certifications will be highlighted in key sessions. Additional sessions will include: the role of colleges, starting or improving programs, program evaluation a nd certification, and specialized programs that can be add-ons to career programs such as Explorers, Youth Court and student organizations. The Conference will have two continental breakfasts and a luncheon with a major speaker. In addition two networking receptions with be held on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

The Certified Protection Officer Program

This is the last of three new certification programs to help states and career programs meet new Perkins requirements and , thus, provide meaningful certifications to students that are backed by national professional associations. The law enforcement and corrections programs are now in the development and pilot stages. The security program will begin this fall with a workshop for pilot sites teams scheduled for Charlotte NC, November 19-21.

Our Primary Partner for this certification program is the International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO). IFPO was established as a non-profit organization in January 1988 for the purpose of facilitating the training and certification needs of protection officers and security supervisors from both the commercial and proprietary sectors. Our other key partner is the
The WSWHE BOCES in Saratoga Springs, NY,  offers a protection officer certification program in conjunction with IFPO. This will be used as a base for developing the national protection officer program. Instructors from the BOCES program will serve as advisers and trainers.
The Certified Protection Officer (CPO) Program has a number of key elements. They include:
A. The Protection Officer Training Manual for the students
B. An instructor guide and set of lesson plans based on the Training Manual and the Career Cluster Security Pathway Knowledge and Skills,                                                              C. Instructor Certification through a 3-day certification workshop and other pre-requisites,                                                           D. Certified Protection Officer Assessment and Certification  

Deadline--Pilot Site Application --- September 10, 2008


The requirements to be a pilot site include:
1.      Identifying one or more instructors to be certified as instructors
2.      Each instructor becoming certified as a Certified Protection Officer at no cost (ensures familiarity with material to be taught)
3.      Each instructor having security or law enforcement experience or equivalent
4.      Each instructor attending the three-day pilot Development and Planning Meeting--11/19-21
5.      Assuring that state requirements are built into the program
6.      Helping develop, revise and test the lesson plans and instructor manual
7.     Conducting one course of at least 10 students preferably in 2009.
There are a number of benefits for being a pilot site. Each site has the advantage of ensuring that what gets developed meets its needs. There are also cost incentives as much of the materials and assessments are provided at no cost or minimum cost. Each site also receives on-going technical assistance as they pilot the courses and assessments.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION SUMMER SUMMIT-
Technology Intergrated Curriculum For Educators and Practitioners in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice

 

November 5-7, 2008

This three day comprehensive workshop, is for K - 16, 2 and 4 year college educators, law enforcement, criminal justice, and security agencies. The workshop focuses on improving technological literacy and education for careers involving forensics and criminal investigation. Areas of technology include digital forensic photography, computer forensics, crime mapping (GIS: Geographic Information Systems), geospatial technology, forensic biology, DNA, interview and interrogation, network security, podcasting, online learning, service learning (emergency database project), undergraduate research (SPSS: Statistical Programming for the Social Sciences). Air

The workshop is sponsored by Century College in Minnesota. The College houses one of the National Partnership's Regional Centers. As a result, many of the partners of the National Partnership are serving as session leaders and workshop instructors.

This workshop provides a great opportunity to learn more about advances in law enforcement and obtain materials and ideas for incorporation into courses at the secondary and post-secondary levels.
