This is the last of three new certification programs
to help states and career programs meet new Perkins requirements and , thus,
provide meaningful certifications to students that are backed by national
professional associations. The law enforcement and corrections programs are now
in the development and pilot stages. The security program will begin this fall
with a workshop for pilot sites teams scheduled for Charlotte NC, November
19-21. The requirements to be a pilot site include: 1. Identifying one or more instructors to be certified as instructors 2. Each instructor becoming certified as a Certified Protection Officer at no cost (ensures familiarity with material to be taught) 3. Each instructor having security or law enforcement experience or equivalent 4. Each instructor attending the three-day pilot Development and Planning Meeting--11/19-21 5. Assuring that state requirements are built into the program 6. Helping develop, revise and test the lesson plans and instructor manual
7. Conducting one course of at least 10 students preferably in
2009.
There are a number of benefits for being a pilot site. Each site has the advantage of ensuring that what gets developed meets its needs. There are also cost incentives as much of the materials and assessments are provided at no cost or minimum cost. Each site also receives on-going technical assistance as they pilot the courses and assessments. Given the short deadline, each interested career program should contact Joe Coffee, Executive Director, and ask for a copy of the program description and the preliminary application. Call him at 703-470-2974 or email at jnc11@msn.com.
